What to Do When You Are Feeling Insecure About Your Body This Summer

Updated June 2025 | Originally published May 2023

Summer can be such a drag when it comes to how we feel about our bodies. Whether it’s packing for a trip, slipping into summer clothes, or scrolling through social media, feelings of insecurity can pop up on the daily.

If you’re sitting with those feelings right now, know you are absolutely not alone. There is a way through this that feels kinder, gentler, and more freeing. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to help you prioritize comfort, self-compassion, and fun this summer.

Step 1: Prioritize Comfort

When you start packing, focus on what feels good on your skin and fits the weather where you’re headed. Choose materials you love and clothes that feel comfortable. When your clothes feel good, you can relax more and spend less energy worrying about how you look.

Step 2: Consider the Occasion

Think about what you’ll be doing. Will you be lounging by the pool, hiking, or going out for dinner? Pack a mix of looser and more fitted clothes so you can choose what feels right on any given day. Giving yourself options is a form of kindness.

Step 3: Focus on the Style You Like

Let go of the idea that your clothes have to “fix” your body or hide things. Instead, pick clothes that make you feel like yourself! Perhaps it's clothes that express your style and personality. I end up discussing this so often in Individual Therapy with clients. When your clothes reflect who you really are, they become a source of confidence, not stress.

Step 4: Prep for Triggers

Before you go, think about what might trigger negative body thoughts. Is it social media? Certain situations? Make a plan for how you will handle those moments. Maybe it means limiting social media or changing clothes in private. Preparing helps protect your peace.

Step 5: Reframe Negative Thoughts with Curiosity

I shared this exercise in a recent newsletter — it’s one of my go-tos: If negative thoughts pop up, try this simple technique: notice the thought without trying to push it away or judge it. Imagine you’re watching a cloud float by and just observing the thought without getting caught up in it. Then gently shift your attention to what your body does for you: swimming, walking, tasting new foods.

Your body carries you through life in so many amazing ways.

This small shift invites kindness and presence.

Step 6: Practice Self-Compassion

Treat yourself like you would treat a bestie, with kindness, patience, and understanding. If you catch yourself being harsh, try this quick self-compassion exercise: place a hand over your heart, take a deep breath, and say to yourself, “You’re allowed to take up space” or “Be gentle with yourself”.Remind yourself that you deserve to enjoy your vacation and that your worth is never tied to your appearance. Self-compassion is my number one summer-approved accessory.

Step 7: Embrace Your Whole Self

You are so much more than your body. Think about what brings you joy, who you love, and what fills you up. When worries about others’ judgments arise (and I am going to hold your hand when I say this) most people are too caught up in their own lives to be focused on you. You are fully enough exactly as you are.

Step 8: Mind the Comparisons

When you notice yourself comparing, pause and remember this: “A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms.” You are on your own path and thats exactly how it is supposed to be. Trust yourself to bloom in your own way.

This summer, let comfort, kindness, and presence be your priorities.

Your body is where you spend all of your time, and it deserves love and respect. Give yourself permission to just be! Fully and unapologetically. And… also dont forget the SPF, the sprinkles on the cone and the way the sun feels on your skin - thats the fun stuff to focus on. 🍊
